Abstract

This paper addresses the important initiatives of Portugal with the creation of the RCAAP portal and of Brazil with the establishment of the Brazilian Portal of Scientific Publications in Open Access. It describes the implementation process of the institutional repository of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). It is an initiative of shared management of resource through the articulation of the repositories that already existed in the institution integrating them around a common institutional policy and with collaborative management in network. It also describes the process of elaborating the information policy in the university, considering the specificities and the representativeness of the technical production that can provide the improvement of the indicators of individual production and of the institution, with reflections in the own science and in the society. It is concluded that structuring a shared information management system in an IR requires commitment and careful work, and that institutional definitions must be supported by studies of the needs of the different segments of the academic community and guided by the considerations of managers and the community the user. These measures allow the integration between the different areas and have a global impact on the scientific and social effort carried out within the UFMG.
